Aho, Giza shine at Big Bear Invite

CASS LAKE — Fergus Falls’ Abbot Aho and Tyler Giza each claimed a crown in their respective weight classes Saturday as the Otters participated in the Big Bear Invitational.

Aho was able to capture the 113 lb. title defeating Bemidji’s Brian Maas 9-5. Aho’s journey to the title match saw him defeat Zach Waln of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale (Tech. fall, 3:00), Aitkin’s Kenny Hesse (Tech. fall, 2:00) and Logan Wadsworth of Hutchinson (Tech. fall, 3:52).

Giza was able to pick up a close 5-3 win over Jake Malone of United North Central in the finals. Giza was given a first round bye and followed that with a win over Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus’ Nathaniel Adkins (Major Dec., 13-2) and Mahnomen/Waubun’s Kole Lefebvre (Major Dec., 9-1) and a injury forfeit in the semi-finals.

The Otters also had two sixth place finishes from Dane Ringquist (152) and Gus Makovsky (182), while Abram Aho took seventh in the 195 lb. weight class.

The Otters finished the tournament in 10th place as a team.

Area schools New York Mills (ninth, 113) and West Central Area (35th, 16) also participated in the meet.

The Otters will take the rest of the year off as they gear up for the second half of their season in 2013 as they host their first home meet Jan. 3 at 6:15 p.m. against Brainerd.
