Vikings top ‘Jackets in HOL opener

In one of the most heated rivalries in the past few years, the Pelican Rapids boys basketball team was able to defend their home court against the Perham Yellowjackets as they started the Heart O’Lakes Conference season with a 53-40 win.

The game was a defensive battle in the first half as both teams looked to push the other into submission. The Vikings were able to leave the court at the break with a 17-12 lead over Perham.

The second half turned into a scoring frenzy for Pelican Rapids as they were able to stretch their lead to 20 points at one point in the contest.

The ‘Jackets looked for a surge late in the half, but they came up short in only their second loss of the season.

Ryan Bruggeman led the Vikings with a rare triple-double with 13 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Teammates Devin Schell (12) and Tucker Forsgren (10) were also in double figures in the game. Forsgren also pulled down nine boards, missing a double-double by one rebound.

Perham’s Eli Beachy was the only Yellowjacket in double digits with 10 points, while teammate Josh Nordick recorded six rebounds in the game.

The Vikings will look to continue their strong early effort as they travel to Frazee Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tilt, while the Yellowjackets will look to rebound as they host the Breckenridge Cowboys in a 7:30 p.m. HOL game Tuesday.
