Viking girls rally to beat Wolverines

PELICAN RAPIDS — A great second half defensive stand led the hosting Pelican Rapids Viking girls to their fifth win of the season as they topped the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines 50-45 Tuesday.

The Wolverines were able to take advantage of the Vikings in the first half as they jumped out to an early 29-23 lead at the break.

Coach Brian Korf’s second half game plan paid dividends as a change of defensive scheme shutdown the Wadena shooters and allowed Pelican Rapids back into the game.

When the dust settled at the end of the game, the Vikings walked off the court with a five point victory.

“We did a great job defensively in the second half,” Korf said. “ We were able to hold Wadena to only 14 points and we forced 18 turnovers in the game.”

The Vikings were led by a Mackenzie Korf with 20 points, while teammate Alyssa Huseby pulled down eight boards in the win.

Pelican Rapids struggled from the field as they went 16 for 50, but were on target from the free throw line as they made 15 of 23.

The Vikings will now travel to Thief River Falls to take on Red Lake Thursday at Northland Community College at 7:30 p.m.
