On to the new year at AC4TA
Published 11:53am Thursday, December 20, 2012Christmas is almost here, then New Year’s Eve, then on to 2013. Wow.
Tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 21, is the last day the lobby at A Center for the Arts is open until after the holiday season, so there’s just one day left to stop in for hot apple cider and cookies and to buy something at our Holiday Art Sale.
We are taking a break for the holidays, and our lobby will reopen again on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
I think January must be Performing Arts Month at the Center because we have auditions for three local performances between Jan. 11 and Feb. 4, plus Mixed Blood Theater performing on Jan. 16, and a community talent show on Jan. 26.
Auditions for the talent show are on from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 and again from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan.12.
Even though the name of the final public performance is “Fergus Falls Has Talent,” people from all over are encouraged to try out.
Any and all kinds of talent are welcome, from music to juggling to poetry readings and more. Performers in one of two age categories (5-16 and 16-adult) will audition before judges, who decide which acts move on to the public, ticketed show on Saturday, Jan. 26.
That night we will have three judges (one of whom has been a national talent agent for more than 20 years) who will select a winner in each age category to receive a $100 cash prize.
Auditions for this year’s annual spring fundraiser, Razzle Dazzle Revue,beginning at 3 p.m. are on Sunday, Jan. 13. There will be a brief informational meeting just before auditions start that everyone who wants to be in the show must attend.
If you have been in Razzle Dazzle Revue in previous years, you do not need to audition, but you do need to come to the meeting and fill out forms. Those auditioning should come prepared to sing a song. This year’s theme is: “Random Acts of Music.”
Our next Center Series show is on Saturday, Jan. 16, with 2 one-act plays by Mixed Blood Theater. One is “Daughters of Africa,” an exuberant, music-driven celebration of African American women’s triumphs and accomplishments.
The other play is “Dr. King’s Dream,” a biography that memorably illuminates why Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is honored with a holiday each January.
The third opportunity to audition is for “Out Of Our Father’s House,” a play about six very influential women in history who faced being ostracized for wanting careers. Auditions are from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 and again from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4. The performance will be March 21, 22 and 23.
