Students may join Scrubs and Scopes health career club

Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) invites area seventh through ninth graders to join “Scrubs and Scopes,” a local health care career club designed to give hands-on experiences to expose youth to the extensive variety of health care career options. The club meets once a month from January through May and gives students the opportunity to meet all kinds of health care professionals, see an operating room and get hands on experiences in health care. The first session will be held on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013.
“This is a really fun and unique way for students to learn about the variety of careers in healthcare,” said LRH CEO, Larry Schulz. “We choose hands-on, interactive learning techniques geared at engaging this age group. For example, in past sessions kids have had the opportunity to apply tourniquets, splints and bandaging and see simulated laparoscopic procedures,” he added.
Several LRH employees offer their time and expertise to the club.  These professionals give a first-hand perspective and share their knowledge with the goal of promoting health-care careers and exposing kids to lesser known health-care career choices.
Pre-registration is required by going to “Education and Events” at www.lrhc.org or calling 218-736-8364. There is a $20 membership fee, and scholarships are available. Registration deadline is Jan. 4.
Scrubs and Scopes is sponsored by Lake Region Healthcare in partnership with Central Minnesota Area Health Education Center.
