Rothsay moves school vote decision to Jan. 8
Published 11:11am Friday, December 21, 2012No decision was made in Rothsay Tuesday night at a special school board meeting on when or in what form to send the levy for a new school back to the voters.
The Rothsay School board had asked district voters on Monday to appropriate $24 million for a new school facility. The board polled returns in a special meeting Tuesday evening. The issue was defeated, with 289 voting no, to 277 voting yes — a margin of 12 votes.
A current operating levy, which the school board had promised to reduce to offset the new building levy expense, was left unchanged at Tuesday’s board meeting.
The school board will discuss next steps for the referendum at their meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8.
Rothsay School is over capacity due to increased enrollment, and also has building issues, including some code violations. The school board proposed building a new facility rather than continuing to add on and fix the current structure.
