Vikings topple D-G-F 81-48Published 10:25am Saturday, December 22, 2012
PELICAN RAPIDS — What looked like a close Heart O’Lakes Conference battle, turned into a blowout as the Pelican Rapids boys used a strong second half effort to top the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels 81-48 Friday night.
The Vikings and Rebels started out the game trading buckets. Post player Tucker Forsgren moved through the lane with ease for Pelican as he dropped in 10 points early in the game. Neither team could pull away from the other as they left at the break with the home team Vikings holding a 31-30 lead.
The second half played out like a completely different game as D-G-F struggled to find points as the Vikings defense stifled the Rebel shooters allowing only 18 tallies through the remainder of the game. Pelican on the other hand, couldn’t miss as they scored 50 second half points as they cruised to a pre-holiday victory.
“Traveling to Frazee on Tuesday and playing back to back games on Thursday-Friday really challenged us to stay focused.” Pelican Rapids’ coach Doug Bruggeman. “The Rebels came out firing on all cylinders in the first half but the Vikings responded to the challenges they faced by increasing their intensity in the second half and gradually building up a 20+ point lead on the Rebels.”
Ryan Bruggeman led the Pelican shooters with 27 points, hitting 13 of those from the charity stripe, while teammate Forsgren finished the evening with 17 points as the Rebel defense adjusted to the dominant post player.
Senior Patrick Coleman returned to action for the first time this season for the Vikings after breaking a finger during football season. Coleman finished the night with 10 marks in the victory.
The Vikings will now prepare for tough competition as they travel to the Moorhead Holiday Tournament Friday. The competition will have several Class AAAA teams in attendence as the Vikings are one of few Class AA teams to participate.
