Fire destroys Ken’s Tackle

Published 11:12am Wednesday, December 26, 2012

A fire early this morning destroyed a favorite local bait and tackle shop on the west side of Otter Tail Lake.

A passerby reported smoke and flames were coming from the roof of Ken’s Tackle at about 4:20 a.m. The roof had already fallen in when deputies arrived, and the walls collapsed shortly after.

Owner Gary Peterson arrived and said he had recently been battling frozen water lines. He reportedly wrapped some lines with heat tape Tuesday. Peterson has owned the shop, located at 28497 County Hwy. 145, since 2005.

Battle Lake Fire Department was assisted by Ottertail Fire and Ringdahl Ambulance. The building was a total loss, but no injuries were reported in the fire.

The case is under investigation with the assistance of the State Fire Marshall.

It saddens me to read about this. When I lived in the area I bought my bait here and that bait would ALWAYS would die trying to get me a fish. I hope the locals help the tradition of of this store and the efforts of the bait that passed through the doors of this establishment.
