Rose Odelia (Burer) Garrett was born on February 23, 1926, in Hamilton, Ohio, the daughter of Paul Edward and Elizabeth Alice (Miller) Burer. Rose attended Saint Ann’s Elementary School and graduated form Fairfield High School, Fairfield Township (now City of Fairfield) Ohio.
On Dec. 19, 1946, Rose married Robert Alvin Garrett and they lived in Fairfield, Ohio, until they moved to Dent in October 1979, after Robert’s retirement from the U.S. postal service.
The beautiful lakes of Otter Tail County had drawn the Garretts to the area in the early 1950′s where they often rented a cabin at Abraham’s Star Lake resort. Rose devoted most of her time to her family, especially her children and grandchildren.
She loved to sing to them and taught them many songs. There was always a full toy box at Grandma’s house and old dresses for the little girls to play dress up. At one time Rose was on a first name basis with most of the local antique dealers. Her yard was full of wild and domestic flowers of many varieties and she was always feeding the song birds.
She is survived by her sister, Charlotte (Melvin) Waterson of Hamilton, Ohio; a daughter, Elizabeth (Kim) Wallner of Lisbon, N.D.; a son, John (Shawn) Garrett of Pelican Rapids; five grandchildren, John Paul (Sara) Whitaker of Detroit Lakes, Tamara Garrett of Moorhead, Heather Garrett of Fargo, Genevieve Perry of Detroit Lakes and Jessica (Abe) Harthun of Springfield, Ill.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Garrett, her parents, Paul and Elizabeth Burer; infant son, Robert Mark Garrett; grandson, Robert Jason Whitaker; and two sisters, Eula Ashdown and Ann Van Wormer.
