Otters win home tourney

The Fergus Falls Otter boys hockey team ended the 2012 portion of their season on a high note Saturday as they defeated West Fargo 5-2 to win their own Holiday Tournament at the Fergus Falls Community Ice Arena.

The game was a back and forth battle to open the game. Fergus’ Alex Phillipe broke the silence as a Joe Nathe pass connected with Phillipe’s stick, slapping it into the Packer net. The Otters knocked in a power play goal two minutes later as Ean Goos punched the puck in off Nathe and Sam Rausch assists. Fergus was not done scoring in the first period as Casey Ward flipped in a Rausch pass to give the home team a three goal advantage.

In the second, the Packers’ Tyler Berginski slipped in the puck past Otter netminder Ian Bjorgum to stop the shutout, but Fergus would respond with a goal by Austin Hanson to maintain their lead.

Kyler Peterson would add the final goal for the Otters in the third period off Nathe and Zach Tarczon assists. West Fargo would hear the buzzer sound one more time in the game as Blake Nelson cashed in on a power play goal.

Bjorgum finished the evening with 29 saves for the Otters

The Otters will look to carry their momentum into the new year as they host the Alexandria Cardinals in a Friday tilt at 7:15 p.m.
