Catching up with Curly

Published 11:05am Wednesday, December 26, 2012

A year ago, the news was filled with Curly, a black Angora goat that wandered away from a Christmas nativity scene, where it was waiting to be led into a Christmas Eve pageant at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.

Curly was on the lam for 25 days before wandering onto the Loomer farm on Dayton Hallow Road, where she found comfort in a warm barn with fellow goats.

So where is Curly today?

“Curly is staying close to home this year,” said the goat’s owner Jim Aakre. “She may be doing some more traveling and guest appearances in the future.”

Jim’s wife, Karen Aakre, helped Curly tell her tale. The former art teacher created a picture book, titled, “A goat’s tail: Curly Gets Cold Feet.”

Much of her writing comes from what she thinks Curly might have thought about while on the loose at many locations in the Fergus Falls area.

“So far we have printed 900 books and sold 800,” said Karen. “Curly gets many requests for guest appearances.”

Though Karen had three engagements to read Curly’s book last week, the goat bowed out gracefully, preferring to stay home in rural Underwood.

“She’s turned into a bit of a diva,” said Karen Aakre. “I’ll go out in the yard and say ‘Hi Curly.’ She turns her head and trots off like she has stuff to do.”

Tom Peterson, a new pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, says live animals were not planned as part of this year’s holiday service.
