Otter boys win OT thrillerPublished 10:16am Monday, December 10, 2012
A third period scoring flurry from both teams forced overtime as the Fergus Falls Otters and Red Wing Wingers fought a tough battle at the Community Ice Arena Saturday. The Otters were able to get their first win of the year 5-4 as Joe Nathe knocked in the winning goal.
In the first period, Zach Tarczon put Fergus on the board with assists from Austin Hanson and Colton Buseth. Red Wing would not respond until period two as Taylor Hanson flipped in an unassisted goal.
The Wingers would go on a scoring blitz in the third period as Ryan Rehder and Nick Sammon put the visitor up 3-1. Hanson would cut the lead to one off a power play goal, but Sammon would add his second goal of the game as Red Wing held a two goal advantage.
The Otters would not lay down as Buseth would find the back of the Winger net midway through the final period. Tarczon would put the Otters even with a goal with under six minutes to play.
Nathe was able to put the Otters in the win column as he scored the deciding goal at the 5:48 mark in overtime.
Fergus goalie Andrew McFarlane had a busy game as he turned away 36 shots on goal, while his team was able to pepper the Red Wing goal with 34 of their own.
The Otter boys will look to ride this momentum into Tuesday’s game as they host Sartell-St. Stephen at 7:15 p.m.
