Eagles use power plays to trump Otters 7-3

The Fergus Falls boys hockey team struggled to stop the visiting St. Cloud Apollo Eagles from taking advantage of the short-handed Otters as they rolled to a 7-3 Central Lakes Conference victory Thursday.

Apollo was able to sound the buzzer midway through the first as Jason Omann slapped in a power play goal off an assist by Brandon Bloch. Bloch would come back less than a minute later to put the Eagles up two goals off a Paul Kenney pass.

The second period began much like the first as Omann found the Otter net again for an unassisted goal. Fergus was able to give the Eagles some of their own medicine as they fought back into the game with two power play goals by Ean Goos and Sam Rausch. Goos found the net unassisted, while Rausch put the puck between the pipes off Joe Nathe and Jesse Ketonen passes.

Just as the Otters took a step forward, they found themselves two steps back as Apollo responded with two power play goals of their own in the period as Jared Christen and Kenney gave the Eagles a 5-2 lead at second intermission.

Christen continued to help the Eagles pile on the goals in the third period as a goal at the 7:49 mark put the Otters on their heels. The Otters’ Zach Tarczon slipped in a goal with an assist by Taylor Lemke at 12:13, but Apollo’s Jordan Keller closed the book on the scoring in the game with a assisted goal.

Apollo was able to convert three of five power play opportunities in the game.

St. Cloud also was able to have an advantage in shots on goal as they recorded 39 compared to the Otters 20.

The Otters will look to stop their three game skid as they host the Detroit Lakes Lakers Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
