At least $7,000 over the band’s fundraising goal, donations from one significant fundraiser not yet counted, and a week to go, band director Scott Kummrow has a good problem to have — finding expenses to spend the extra money on.
“I love this community so much,” Kummrow said.
Having raised $19,000 in a span of four days, the band has $67,000 to use for its trip to Washington, D.C. to play the Presidential Inauguration on Jan. 21. The band leaves Thursday afternoon.
According to Scott Kummrow, the events over the weekend raised
$6,200. The Taco John’s fundraiser raised about $1,200, according to Taco John’s owner Brian Fuder. The goal for the weekend was $7,050, according to Kummrow.
The band had a $60,000 goal to pay for the transportation and hotel costs, and a good share of the extra funds will pay for meals — each meal will cost between $700 and $800 — and incidentals, such as extra hotel rooms for bus drivers.
“We have a bunch of incidentals we’ll have to pay for,” Kummrow said. “But it’s hard to know what those are yet. There are all kinds of little things along the way.”
If there happens to be funds left over after the trip, Kummrow said he will use them as seed money for new marching band uniforms. The band’s current uniforms are 20 years old.
Marching band to perform Tuesday at halftime
A Fergus Falls Marching Band send off performance in full uniform is planned Tuesday during halftime of the Fergus Falls girls basketball game against Brainerd.
An entrance fee will be charged for the game to see the performance.
Send-off 2 p.m. Thursday
A public send off is scheduled Thursday at 2 p.m. in the high school activities hallway, with buses loading at approximately 2:20 p.m. and leaving at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Residents may also see the band off as it travels out of town. Buses will travel from the school to Shopko, turning down Lincoln Avenue and driving to Perkins before heading to D.C.
