Crashes pile up, force I-94 closure [UPDATED]
Published 11:04am Monday, January 14, 2013 Updated 11:20am Monday, January 14, 2013Extremely icy conditions and accidents promoted the closing of a
significant section of westbound Interstate 94 Friday night near the
Dalton exit.
According to Sgt. Jesse Grabow of the Minnesota State Patrol, there were a total of 10 crashes, including four rollovers, in the area. Three of the crashes involved injuries, none were life threatening.
Two busses had trouble making it up the incline near the rest stop. One of the busses ended up in the ditch, the other ended up sideways blocking the westbound lane, delaying EMS crews from Ashby’s arrival on the scene.
“Vehicles were strewn everywhere,” said Mark Zlotnick, First Assistant Fire Chief from Ashby. “Dalton EMS was already on the scene when we arrived, so we only transported one person with minor injuries.”
The back trailer of a double axle trailer flipped over in the slippery roads. The trailers, loaded with nine new cars was towed to Beyer Body Shop and Towing in Fergus Falls. Auto Transport Brothers out of North Carolina owns the vehicle. Driver Viktor Sizov was not seriously hurt.
Grabow said because of the accidents State Patrol closed about a 50
mile section of I-94 between Alexandria and Fergus Falls between 9:30
p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday.
