A slow start did not phase the Fergus Falls boys hockey team as they went on to defeat the Detroit Lakes Lakers 5-2 Saturday.

The Lakers were able to score the lone goal of the first period at the 10:53 mark as Ryan Deconcini’s punched the puck in off Austin Rusness and Ben Nelson assists.

The Otters would get back on track in the second period as Sam Rausch tapped in a Colton Buseth and Casey Ward pass for a power play goal. Fergus would take the lead as Lane Rogers put the puck between the pipes off Rausch and Ward assists to give the Otters a 2-1 advantage.

Adam Evenson would continue to pour it on for Fergus as he followed with a goal less than three minutes later off a Rogers pass. Detroit Lakes would be able to respond as Brady Crawford found the back of the Otter net to cut the lead to one before the second intermission.

Fergus would put the game away in the third period as goals by Evenson and Rausch put the game out of reach for the visitor.

Otter goalie Ian Bjorgum had a solid night in net as he turned away 21 shots on goal, while Fergus finished the evening with 32 shots, after only having four in the first period.

The Otters will be back on the road Tuesday as they take on Wadena-Deer Creek in a 7 p.m. showdown.
