The real key to self-defense is awareness.

That’s what Tae Kwon Do Master Cody Fisher said about the upcoming Fergus Falls Tae Kwon Do Demo Day and Free Women’s Self Defense seminar, set for Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Westridge Mall.

The event, aimed for women 13 and up, is to teach some basic self-defense and for women to keep an eye out in their surroundings for potential threats.

“It’s a one-hour seminar, sort of an introductory seminar. We’ll teach some basic moves,” Fisher said. “But we can’t teach someone to be Bruce Lee in an hour-long seminar.”

Fisher, a 5th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, has been in the Fergus Falls area since 1982, and has been teaching the martial art since about 1992. He began practicing the martial art since 1987. He said he hopes to get his 6th degree black belt in the next year or two.

“When you get to those ranks, they don’t come quite as fast (as other ranks),” Fisher said.

Also with the seminar are some teachings for improved cardiovascular and weight loss techniques, though Fisher added there is only some much they can teach within an hour for such exercises.

There also will be mini demos and exhibition sparring matches throughout the day, which Fisher said allows the students to show what they can do.
