Spartans hold off Cavs

After gaining a huge lead in the first half, the Spartan men were able to hold off a late charge by Western Wisconsin Tech 103-94.

In the first half, Chuckie Smith scored 20 points in the first half, nailing six treys as M State built a 55-37 half-time.

The Cavaliers were able to make adjustments in the second half and got back within two points of the visiting Spartans. M State was able to do just enough late in the half to pick up their fifth straight win.

Shane Bosek led the Spartans with 31 points, while Smith ended with 29. Teammates Boomer Blossom (16), Luke Halbakken (11) and Jason Nelson (10) were also in double figures. Blossom recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds in the win.

The Spartans will look to remain unbeaten in 2013 as they travel to Rochester Saturday for a 3 p.m. Southern Division tilt.

 

Cavaliers top

M State in OT 85-78

LACROSSE, WI — A string of close games just have not bounced the way of the M State women’s basketball team as they lost a heated overtime battle with Western Wisconsin Tech 85-78 Wednesday.

The Cavaliers were able to control most of the first half, but saw their lead dwindle as the Spartans took a 39-38 lead into the break.

The teams fought hard throughout the second half as they forced an overtime period as the game ended in regulation 74-74.

Turnovers proved to be costly for the Spartans in the five minute overtime period as the host was able to outscore M State 11-4 and pick up the win.

Maria Johnson was a force for M State beyond the arc as she hit seven of 14 shots and finished the evening with 25 points.

Teammates Rhoda Christenson (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Alyssa Blair (16 points, 11 rebounds) each recorded a double-double in the game.

The Spartans will look to end their slide as they travel to take on Rochester in a 1 p.m. Southern Division contest Saturday.
