Council delays vote on sign law

Published 10:56am Wednesday, January 23, 2013

It will take a little more time for a new sign ordinance.

At Tuesday night’s Fergus Falls City Council meeting, concerns were raised with the proposed ordinance by council members, but they did agree that some sort of regulation is needed.

“What I’m concerned with is that this seems like it may be over regulating,” Council member Jay Cichosz said of the planning commission’s proposal.

“Well, if you look at the proposal, it is actually more business friendly than our current ordinance,” Community Development Director Gordon Hydukovich said.

The council decided to a 90-day moratorium for further investigation into the ordinance. The council asked Hydukovich and Len Taylor if they could talk with members of the Fergus Falls Chamber of Commerce for some rephrasing in the proposal. The agreed that they would in the coming weeks.

In other news, the council approved:

· Resolution authorizing the advertising bids for an automated refuse truck.

· Resolution to authorize the city to submit a grant application for Certified Local Government Funds and Legacy Funds to conduct a historical survey in the north east area of town.

· Resolution to authorize the city to submit a grant application for the Safe Routes to School Program.
