Sabres blast shorthanded Otters 7-1

With several players out sick and a few playing at the President’s inauguration with the Fergus Falls Marching Band, the Otter girls had to make several last minute switches.

The visiting Sartell-St. Stephen Sabres were able to take advantage of the shorthanded Otters as they defeated their host 7-1.

The Sabres got on the board early in the first as Olivia Stockinger slipped in a goal off an Ashley Raduns and Erin Deters assist. Sartell would add two more goals in the first as Ahna Richardson and Nikki Partch sounded the buzzer to give the Sabres a 3-0 lead.

Fergus was able to strike in second period as Annie Magnusson took passes from Sydney Kuehl and Steph Kolstad and planted a power play goal in the back of the Sartell net. The Otters would not find the net the rest of the evening as the Sabres Nina Jacobson and Caitlin Halupczok would add two more goals for the visitor.

With the game already in hand, the Sabres Halupczok and Stockinger would each record their second goals of the evening as they left the Fergus Falls Community Ice Arena with a win.

“We had to put different lines together the last minute due to illness and other things,” Otter coach Matt Koalska said. “It’s difficult but the girls played well. The score was not indicative of how the girls played tonight.”

The Otters crashed the net hard on the Sabres as they put 33 shots on goal, but only found the net once. The Sabres only mounted 19 swings at the net, but were able to score on 36 percent of their shots.

The Otters will look to be full strength Thursday as they travel to take on the Moorhead Spuds in a 7:15 p.m. contest.
