After being held to only two points in the first half, Mike Millard took over on the offensive end for the Fergus Falls boys basketball team as they were able to defeat Central Lakes Conference rival Alexandria 57-52 in a physical Thursday night showdown.

Both teams battle hard in the first half and saw key players get into foul trouble to boot. Alexandria was able to leave the court at the break holding a slim one point lead 24-23.

In the second half, the Otters Millard was able to find his stroke from the field as he scored 22 points in the half and saw the Fergus team pick up their ninth win of the season.

“It was a very close game all the way through,” Otter assistant coach Derek Abrahams said. “It was a very physical game and we knew it was going to be that type of game from the start.”

Millard finished with 24 points to lead the Otter shooters. Teammate Austin Rund was also in double figures as he chipped in 12 tallies in the win.

The Fergus defense held Alexandria’s star player Logan Doyle to 12 points and allowed John Vogeler to chip in a dozen of his own.

Fergus was able to make it a clean sweep as both the JV and ninth grade teams claimed victories over the Cardinals. The Otter JV defeated Alexandria 60-50 as Noah Strom led the scoring with 18. In the ninth grade game, Fergus saw Matthew Monke drop in 31 points in a 88-64 win.

The Otters will be back on the road Tuesday as they take on the Perham Yellowjackets in a 7:30 p.m. non-conference tilt.
