Principal Dean Monke has advice for parents this year and next.

“Please pay close attention at the start of each term,” said Monke. “It’s important to see how your student has started the term. If they struggle and there is a couple of bad grades, it’s really hard to recover from.”

Monke also discussed new classes and curriculum changes for Fergus Falls High School next year.

“We plan on offering a wellness course, and a strength and conditioning course,” said Monke. “There are also different chemistry and physics requirements for class of 2015.”

Monke explained that the required chemistry classes would be offered at three levels; foundations, traditional and honors. The same levels would be offered for algebra II, but if a student takes an algebra II foundations class, they are asked to make a commitment to a fourth year of math, so they would take a math class in senior year.

Foundation classes are a slower-pace course, but still meet the core requirements set by the state. Also, students in foundation classes must be placed by teacher recommendation.

“We have to encourage our students a little bit to take some more challenging level classes,” said Monke.
