Exercise, fitness keys for 2013

So here we are, starting out a new year with only memories of the past year — some good and some not so good. I was ushered out of 2012 with an introduction to the Lake Region Healthcare Cancer Care and Research Center and right into 2013 with some more of the same. Oh how fortunate we are to have this fantastic, wonderful facility full of friendly, dedicated and professional people.

And there is no more transporting out of town.

Last month I said we would have some business to attend to at the Y’s Folk organizational meeting and we did have election of new people to help run the show. Joyce Bruns is now past president; Larry Zenner is president; Ginny Portmann and Carmon Jackson share the president-elect position; secretary is shared by Darlene Sigurdson with Richard and Judy Edinger, Donna Toso continues on as treasurer and Arnie Levsen and Claudia Schriver came on as board members to relieve Yvonne Burt and Carolyn Ellingson.

We did decide to take $1,500 from our membership fund and give to the YMCA to use as they please — no special project at this time. More later for a special project from our rund raising account.

During our organizational potluck meeting at noon Monday, Jan. 21, we will install these new people and then we will have a program put on by our very own Health and Wellness Coordinator Stacy Vaughn.

Stacy leads the Silver Sneakers exercise program at the Y and she will tell us how the YMCA sponsors the program and how our membership dues may be paid at the YMCA by Silver Sneakers.

Stacy is a local gal who went to school in Fergus Falls all the way through two years at the community college. She has taken many specialty courses in exercise and physical fitness which has been a long time interest for her and for her family.

She and her husband, Jason, have three children ranging in age from grade school through high school. Come hear more about this great program.

The YMCA Winter/Spring (January through May) 2013 program of activities folder is out and ready for you to pick up at the Y. Right now in January there is 20 percent off on personal training fees for members and the “joiner fee” is waived for new members.

On Saturday Jan. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Family Expo” with Lakes Radio will be at the Y and the YMCA board members are hosting a pancake feed from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Community Room. I wonder if those pancakes will taste anything like flapjacks.
