Fast start puts BL over HLA girls 46-31

The Battler girls basketball team took off early Tuesday night, starting the game with a 7-0 run against the Hillcrest Comets. The start helped secure a 46-31 victory for Battle Lake.

“Battle Lake was tough in the paint, and they shot a better percentage than we did,” said Hillcrest head coach Charlie Brue. “We got behind early and were never able to catch up. They shot free throws well to close the game.”

The Battler offense saw two players hit double digits. Sophomore guard Maddy Merickel lead the team with 12 points, while center Katie Rilla followed up with 11. Rilla was also pulled down 10 boards, giving her a double-double. Emily Marso lead the Battlers with 11 rebounds.

For the Comets, Kelly Nersten carried the offense with 16 points.

Both teams continue Little Eight Conference play Thursday night. Battle Lake will host the Rothsay Tigers, while Hillcrest sets their sights on an upset, as they take on No. 7 (Class A) Parkers Prairie at home. Both games are set for a 7:30 p.m. start time.
