HLA backs down Battlers

A hard fought defensive battle saw the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy boys edge the Little Eight Conference leader Battle Lake Battlers on the road 41-36 Monday.

It was clear to see in the opening minutes that the game was going to be a defensive battle as the usually fast-paced offenses were slowed down by strong defensive play.

Hillcrest would walk off the court at the break holding a 19-17 lead over the host.

The second half played out much like the first as both teams could not get their offense on course. Battle Lake struggled to find second chance shots in the game and saw the visiting Comets hand them their second conference loss.

Daniel Nersten led the Hillcrest shooters with 15 points, while post player Trevor Leach recorded a double-double with 11 tallies and 10 rebounds in the victory.

The Comets will continue to take on the top competitors in LEC as they host the current leader Ashby Arrows Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Battlers now find themselves a game out of first place and a game a head of Hillcrest in the LEC. Battle Lake will be back in action Tuesday as they travel to Rothsay to take on the Tigers in a 7:30 p.m. LEC tilt.
