Center Series a way to escape without leaving [UPDATED]

We are going to combat cabin fever and heat things up during the dead of winter here at A Center for the Arts. We are half-way through our 2012-13 Center Series, aptly subtitled: “Escape Without Leaving.” There are four performances done and four more to go. And you don’t want to miss the next four, that’s for sure! The next show is this coming Saturday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m. It will feature the professional dance/theater company out of Minneapolis, the Flying Foot Forum, performing their show entitled “The Percussion Project.”

All week long, the Flying Foot Forum has been in residence here in Fergus Falls. All of the educational outreach activities that they have done, and will do Thursday and Friday, are free of charge to the various groups attending because of a touring grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, made possible through the Legacy Amendment. Every day during this week they have worked directly with students at the Fergus Falls School of Dance, and some of those dancers will actually get a chance to dance on stage with the company during their public performance on Saturday.

They are not only working with numerous classes at the Fergus Falls School of Dance, but they already have or will also do the following: engage the public schools through workshops with a dance class, 8th grade orchestra students, and band students; host a public dance workshop for other dance groups like The Edge and Just for Kix and the general public; explore the history of tap dance and do demonstrations for folks at Mill Street Residence; and do a lecture/demonstration for residents at PioneerCare Center and the Cancer Care and Research Center.

We hope you’ll join us on Saturday, February 9 for their public performance. And you might recognize some local Fergus dancers up on stage as well!

As I have mentioned, this show is part of our 2012-13 Center Series, a subscription series of 8 concerts from September 2012 thru May of 2013. Now that February is here and we are halfway through our first Center Series, it’s time for us to announce next year’s Center Series.

On Friday, February 15 we are having a “Preview Night” for our 2013-14 Center Series to unveil the 7 shows that will be in the series from September 2013 thru May of 2014. This event is free and open to the public. It starts at 6 p.m. with social time, and at 6:30 p.m. we will begin our announcements. There will be video clips of the various acts, and Executive Director Michael Burgraff will be there explaining all the details. This will be your first opportunity to see what we’re bringing next year and sign up for reserved seats for the season!

The Center has a lot going on the next few weeks. Remember that we have gone digital with our monthly newsletter. Our February newsletter is now available online through our website, www.fergusarts.org. You will find detailed information about upcoming events as well as articles from the staff. If you are unable to access our newsletter online, please let us know and we’d be happy to print a copy for you.
