High school shooting team good for students [UPDATED]

While there has been a lot of negativity floating around about firearms recently, we applauld the efforts of the Lakes Area Shooting Center to create a high school trap shooting team in Fergus Falls.

Hunting and target shooting are lifetime sports that don’t require participants to run fast, jump high or throw a ball to find success like many competitive activities.

The team would give many kids who wouldn’t normally compete in traditional sports a chance to be a part of a team while learning valuable life lessons.

For those concerned about violence, shooting center members say safety would be a top priority for the team, and students would be taught proper firearm safety practices from experts. Trap shooting has been a Minnesota high school sport since 2001, and since it began, there have been zero reported injuries or violations of school gun policies among participants.

We encourage the School Board to consider the many benefits of a sport like trap shooting. We want the young people of the community to find success in a sport they can enjoy while learning valuable life lessons, and we think a high school trap shooting team could do just that.
