Otters come back, get win over Apollo

On the stick of Sam Rausch, the Fergus Falls boys hockey team came back from a two-goal deficit to defeat St. Cloud Apollo Thursday night, 5-4.

The Otters gave up three unanswered goals to trail the Eagles 3-1 after two periods.

Rausch scored the first three goals for the Otters, giving him a hat trick for the game. After the game was tied in the third period, the Otters took the late lead after Casey Ward put a shot past the Apollo goalie. The Eagles would answer with another to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Austin Hanson would deliver the game winner in overtime to put the Otters past Apollo.

For head coach Mike Donaghue, Rausch’s performance was critical to the victory.

“Rausch really stepped up his game with the hat trick and lead us on the night,” he said.

But for Donaghue, it was the team’s overall effort to stay competitive in the game that will help build momentum going into the section tournament.

“It was a great way for our guys to end the season,” said Donaghue. “Our guys kept playing tough against a very skilled Apollo team. I’m hoping this gives us some energy and belief heading in to our game against Willmar.”

The Otters will face off against Willmar at home next Tuesday night in their first game of the Section 6A tournament. The game is schedule to begin at 7 p.m.
