THIEF RIVER FALLS — When the dust settled at the Section 8AA wrestling meet, the No. 1 seeded Perham Yellowjackets stood tall as they claimed the section title and will move on to the state meet at the Xcel Energy Center Feb. 28.Owen

The ‘Jackets defeated the third seeded Detroit Lakes Lakers 36-26 in the championship dual.

The sixth seeded Fergus Falls Otters looked to make a run in the meet as they opened against 11th seed Staples-Motley.

Fergus came out ready to wrestle as they captured the first four matches of the dual. The Cardinals would rally taking the next four matches before Dane Ringquist scored a pin on Josh Robben in the 160 lbs. match.

Staples would win the following match, but the Otters would close out with four straight wins by Gus Makovsky (182 lbs.), Abram Aho (195 lbs.), Tommy Weaver (220 lbs.) and Andrew Tysdal (285 lbs.) to advance to quarterfinals.

The Otters took on a fresh Lakers squad in the quarter-finals. After a hard fought and close match up, the Lakers were able to score a key pin to defeat Fergus Falls 34-31.

Abbot Aho (120 lbs.) and Tyler Giza (126 lbs.) kept the Otters in the dual in the early going.

The Lakers would claim most of the lower weight classes, but a late run in the upper divisions by the Otters put them in the driver seat with a match to go.

The Lakers were able to pick up the win as James Huwe pinned Fergus’ Taylor Tenner in the heavyweight match.

The Otters will now prepare themselves for the Section 8AA individual tournament that will be held at the Kennedy Secondary Gold Gym Friday and Saturday.
