Hunters clearing Dalton of coyotes [UPDATED]
Published 5:51am Monday, February 25, 2013 Updated 7:55am Monday, February 25, 2013A group of hunters regularly goes out by Dalton and surrounding communities to hunt coyotes. Thursday morning, Nick Heeter and Byron Dorn were able to track down and shoot four of the animals. The pair said there have been many coyote sightings in the area, and they are concerned about the predators.
“That many coyotes, they can take everyone’s cats and dogs,” said Dorn. “They also prey on fawns and affect the deer popluation which is not good for hunting.”
Heeter and Dorn are also avid deer hunters.
“Coyotes kill the things I like to eat,” said Heeter.
Dorn said they go out with a group and run the dogs regularly. Hunters look for coyote tracks, then send the dogs in to flush out coyotes where they are are bedded down in trees and bushes. It can be difficult to take a coyote when it is on the run.
Dorn said coyotes can be hunted year round. A special permit is required, and also hunters that use a radio also need a special radio permit.
