In a move to attract and retain students from kindergarten on up, the Fergus Falls School Board voted to unanimously to make all-day every-day kindergarten free for all students.

The fee has been $195 per month, $75 per month for students who qualify for reduced price lunch, and free for those who qualify for free lunch. The fees have generated about $75,000 annually.

“We’re big believers in our all-day every-day program, and we want to make sure every student can attend for free,” Superintendent Jerry Ness said. “The more time they can spend with their teachers the better. We want to make sure we are the number one option in the area for students, and retain those students to continue on in Fergus Falls schools.”

Other options such as Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning only will still be available.

The Legislature is considering funding free all-day kindergarten for students that qualify for free or reduced lunch.
