Grant County residents turn out to feed kids locally and globally

One hundred and fifty volunteers turned out on Feb. 16 to package Food for Kidz, packets that will be delivered to hungry kids around the world — including in Grant County.

Food for Kidz provides opportunities for community and service groups to package a specially designed, fully nutritious meal and to distribute this packet of food to hungry children and their families where crisis has struck and there is an immediate need.

Lions groups from Elbow Lake, Ashby and Wendell joined forces with community and church members and members of other Lions clubs, putting together 71,652 meals in three hours at the community center in Wendell.

“We did it primarily to help with the hunger problem, including in the U.S.,” said Doug Godwin, a Lions club member who lives between Elbow Lake and Ashby. “Part of the Lions mission is to serve, and that’s what we’re here for.”

Food for Kidz is based in Lowry, Minn.

“We asked the organization if we could keep some food back to distribute locally, and they had no problem with that,” Godwin said. “Some of the dinners will go to the Grant County Food Shelf in Elbow Lake, some may go to either Glenwood or Starbuck.”

Other volunteer groups are invited to organize their own Food for Kidz packaging event. The organization brings the ingredients, equipment and supplies to the group’s location where volunteers bag food for distribution. It costs Food for Kidz 15 cents a meal to help eradicate hunger and starvation in the world.
