The Fergus Falls’ wrestling team is sending four members to the state tournament after hosting the Section 8AA individual tournament Friday and Saturday.

As reported Sunday, Abbot Aho (113 lbs.), Tyler Giza (120 lbs.) and Dane Ringquist (152 lbs.) all advanced to the state tournament for the Otters.

Aho and Giza each captured the section title in their respective divisions, while Ringquist finished as the runner-up in his weight class.

Giza also celebrated winning his 125th match before the festivities were underway.

Wrestlebacks continued through Saturday as the Fergus’ Gus Makovsky (182 lbs.) and Abram Aho (195 lbs.) were still actively pursuing a state berth.

Makovsky received a bye in the first round Friday, but lost his following match to Alex Lindsay of United Clay Becker 10-4.

On Saturday, Makovsky fought through tough competition in wrestlebacks defeating Drew Peterson of Staples Motley 2-1, Detroit Lakes’ Jason Griego 2-0.

In a rematch from Friday, Makovsky was able to shutout UCB’s Lindsay 8-0 for a major decision win. In a true second match, Makovsky was able to edge Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus’ Justin Mackenthun 7-6 and claim a state bid.

Abram Aho looked to do the same as Makovsky in the 195 lbs. division as he defeat Detroit Lakes’ Cameron Fritz by fall and topped Perham’s Jesse Klatt by fall in the third place match. He was unable to wrestle a true second match as he opponent had already defeated him previously in the tournament.

Assistant Coach Mark Aho also received an honor at the event as he was named Assistant Coach of the Year.

The four Otters will now travel to the Xcel Energy Center Thursday for the beginning of the Class AA state wrestling tournament.
