Diver makes big splash
Published 11:15am Monday, March 4, 2013After taking fourth place in the preliminaries, Michael Aasness figured he had to step up his game to move up in the finals.
He did that, and more. In his final meet, the Fergus Falls senior diver second place at the Class A state meet Saturday with a score of 388.80.
Aasness’s second place finish was the best finish ever by a Fergus Falls diver at the state meet.
“It feels really good,” Aasness said of his second place finish. “I was hoping to do better and after taking fourth in the prelims, I knew that I had to nail my last three dives through the finals.”
Aasness’s first two dives of the finals found him in first place just ahead of the leader, Hill-Murray’s Joe McGrath, with one final dive left.
“In the final dive, I got a little too close to the board, but I was very happy to make the podium,” Aasness added.
McGrath would win the event with a 397.25 final score.
As a team, the Otters finished sixth overall at the meet behind several of the top names in Class A.
“With all the powerhouse teams down at the meet and us with such a small team, I thought it was quite an accomplishment,” Aasness said.
Aasness has a bright future, hoping to dive in college, he is currently weighing his his options but did not have any plans set in stone at this time.
