The Fergus Falls City Council has an updated open forum policy for those wishing to address the council during meetings. It adopted the new policy at its Feb. 19 meeting.
The biggest change is that anyone who would like to address the mayor and council during the open forum session must file a completed written request with the city administrator’s office at least 24 hours in advance of a regular meeting.
Since city council meetings are held Monday evenings twice a month, this means forms would need to be turned in to the city administrator’s office no later than Friday afternoon. Part of the purpose behind this change is so that city staff can be prepared with information when the citizen brings his or her concern forward during the meeting.
The city believes it is important to have an open forum session to allow members of the public to address the mayor on items that are not on the agenda, according to the open forum policy document.
Before this new policy, the council had operated without a formal open forum policy.
Open forum registration forms can be obtained on the city’s website, at the front desk of city hall or outside the council chambers. The forms ask for the participant’s name, address and a brief detailed statement of the comment or issue to be addressed.
