Comets eclipse Eagles 72-46
Published 10:30am Friday, March 8, 2013The Hillcrest Comets cruised to their first victory in the Section 6A boys basketball tournament, defeating the New York Mills Eagles 72-46.
The game saw junior Daniel Nersten become the all time scoring leader at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy. Nersten’s 20 points secured the record and led Hillcrest on the night. He leads the Comets in scoring this year with 456 points and has averaged just over 20 points a game. Nersten also eclipsed the 1000 point milestone earlier this year.
Other Comets in double digits included Calveti Nyabingi with 14 and Trevor Leach, who followed up with 12.
Hillcrest shot 53% (30-57) from the field, which kept a steady distance between the two teams for most of the game. The Comets took a 27 point lead halfway through the second half, their largest of the night.
That hot hand has given Hillcrest a surge of momentum at the end of the year. The Comets have won 10 of their last 11 and improved their overall record to 14-8 with Thursdays win.
The Eagles were led by Zach Bauck with 14 points and Damon Tumberg who dropped 10.
Hillcrest will play the second seeded Ulen-Hitterdal Spartans on Saturday at Concordia College in Moorhead. The game is scheduled for 2:45 p.m.
