11 chickens perish in barn fire [UPDATED]

A barn which housed about 11 chickens near Holmes City was a total loss following a structure fire early Monday. All of the chickens are believed to have perished in the fire, according to a news release from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 3:36 a.m., the Alexandria Fire Department and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to 5423 County Rd. 7 S.W. for a reported barn fire. The structure was already burned to the ground upon their arrival, according to the release. Nearby trees and a wood pile at the residence were also on fire. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
