Bike or Walk to Work or School Week May 4-12 [UPDATED]Published 10:05am Monday, March 18, 2013 Updated 12:06pm Monday, March 18, 2013
Tentatively mark your calendars for May 4-12 as this year’s Bike or Walk to Work or School Week. With the proclamation presented this morning to the Public Works and Safety Committee, it just needs an official read by Mayor Hal Leland at the next city council meeting.
The annual event will have online registration and a chance to win a prize. A competition in the past has been between Fergus Falls Public Schools and Lake Region Healthcare. This year, M State-Fergus Falls will also be added to the mix, Patrick Hollister said at the meeting.
According to the proclamation, the city encourages the increased use of bicycles and walking as means of transportation, which will benefit all citizens by improving the air quality, reducing traffic congestion, decreasing the use of and dependence upon finite energy sources and creating increased physical activity.
Hollister said they have not heard yet whether they received a Bicycle Friendly Community grant, which was submitted online at the end of February. They expect to know by the end of April, he said.
