Athletes should have consolidated facilities [UPDATED]Published 9:20am Thursday, March 21, 2013 Updated 11:23am Thursday, March 21, 2013
As a recent graduate of Fergus Falls High School (Class of 2012), I support the Fergus Falls Public Schools’ Outdoor Facilities Bond Referendum. I was a member of the Otter girls tennis team during high school, and played last fall here at Luther College.
Since Kennedy High School only had four courts on site (and not in very good condition) all our tennis matches had to be played in the city parks so we had to get a ride from someone or bike/walk to the courts. It was a little chaotic figuring out who had cars, was the weather going to be nice enough for riding bike, etc. If we had been able to practice right at Kennedy there wouldn’t have been any excuses for being late or missing practice.
We also weren’t able to host tournaments and seemed to be travelling more frequently than other athletes. Coaches said that to host tournaments we had to have at least eight courts in one location. Fergus Falls doesn’t have eight courts together anywhere. It was amazing to have a new/renovated school during my last couple years there, but it would have been better if we had the whole package.
I hope for the younger kids they can have the advantage of new tennis courts and the other things in the outdoor plan. Tennis is a great sport and I hope the program grows in Fergus Falls. I already voted YES since I’m away at college (and voted absentee). I hope you will too.
