Lester Leo Barnack was born on May 22, 1927, at home in Leaf Mountain Township in rural Clitherall. His parents were the late John and Agatha (Turchin) Barnack.
Lester grew up on the family farm in Leaf Mountain Township where he attended Country School at District 70. He was 14 years old when he went to North Dakota to work on the harvest fields.
Returning home he worked on area farms and enjoyed traveling with friends. Lester was employed with the Ore Boats on the Great Lakes from 1951, to 1986.
He mainly sailed on the Humphrey and the Weir on the Great Lakes. In 1986, Lester retired and made his home at his cabin on Marion Lake in rural Richville.
Lester would spend his winters in Sequin, Wash., where he fished halibut, sturgeon, steelhead and also traveled to Naselle, Wash., and fished the Columbia River.
He enjoyed cooking, canning fish, shopping and attending the Threshers Reunion in Rollag. In 2005, Lester made his home at Willow Creek in Henning.
Preceding Lester in death were his parents, John and Agatha; a brother, Vincent; a brother-in-law, Anthon “Tony” Hanson; and close friend, Lorraine Saarinen.
Lester is survived by his sister, Virginia Hanson (Darrel Holm) of Henning; four nieces, Cindy (Dave) Wallace of Battle Lake, Cheryl (Dale) Thomas and Tonette (Dan Kraft) Hanson, all of Moorhead, and Tina (Terry Markhardt) Deckert of Fargo; 10 great-nieces and nephews; four great-great-nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Charlotte Barnack of Henning; many other relatives; and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at Belmont Funeral Home in Henning, with the Rev. Roger Johnson. Burial will be in Girard Union Cemetery in rural Henning.
