Everyone cringed when the narrator stopped after reading the first part of the question, “What two elements…” expecting an answer. The teammates glared at Jared Kugler and spokesperson Chris Bigelow rambled off an educated guess.
Hillcrest Hazel, composed of Chad Hermes, Jordan Konynenbelt, Jaron Olsoe, Jared Kugler and Chris Bigelow, competed in the regional Knowledge Bowl competition on March 22.
Along with the Hazel team, the junior team, Hillcrest Huckleberry, made up of Quincy Undseth, Brandon Doering, Rena Fedorova, Kris Lein, and Tony Preston, contended in the matches.
Held at Life Church, three school divisions battled for one of the six trophies and the chance to compete at state.
When asked how he thought Hazel would do, Jordan Konynenbelt confidently said, “Win.” Indeed, Hazel held first place the entire day, with Huckleberry considerably close, competing in the same room.
The judges were charmed by the animated teams’ banter, when answering questions ranging in subjects from math to history.
At the end of the event, the proud senior team came up to claim their trophy and the privilege to compete at Cragun’s Resort in April.“(The season) was great, I’m pleased with Huckleberry, who rose in the second round and grew during the season,” coach Jane Uggerud said, “and I’m obviously delighted that Hazel is going to state!”
