Family reading area new to library

The Friends of the Library donated money to allow the Fergus Falls Public Library to purchase inexpensive furniture to create a small family reading area in the children’s section.

The space for the furniture was created when library staff removed the paperback racks from the children’s area by shelving the paperbacks with the hardcover books, according to Library Director Erin Smith.

“We decided to create the space because of the identified lack of seating for older children and adults in the Children’s Area,” she said, “making it difficult for parents to monitor their children and play with their children in the space.

The renewed space is a pilot project for the library and library patrons with children.

If comments left on the Library’s Facebook page are any indication, it is a hit. Here is a sampling of responses:

• Scott Meldahl — Looks awesome!!

• Jenny Harrington-Stumbo — So awesome! So welcoming! Thank you library staff!

• LeeAnn Turchin — I was there when they were putting down new carpet. Looks great.

• Rebekah and Adam Ekelund — Thank you Friends! It looks awesome!

• Denny Johnson — Looking grrrrrrrreat!!!!!!

• Thomas John Johnson — Looks very nice. Well done!

Library staff have also received an overwhelming number of positive responses from library users as well, said Smith.

“Everyone from parents, grandparents and middle school-aged children are using the new furniture,” she said. “This very small, but very impactful project is just one illustration of how the community values the library as a meeting space open to everyone.”

The Friends of The Library provides money, support and encouragement to the staff and library programs. The group meets monthly and has approved financial support for library books, children, teens, adult and family programs, and thousands of dollars for laptops, iPads and other technology enhancements, along with the training for patrons to use the technology at the library.

FOL receives its funds from memberships, its annual book sale, the book cart, sale of book bags, silent auctions and donations from library friends.

The group is planning its annual meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the library, and is requesting memberships of $10, $25, $50 or more from individuals and businesses to help it continue its financial support of library needs.

With more and more people spending more time at the library using its computers, wireless access, attending programs, using the children’s area and more, relaxing spaces such as the new space in the children’s area are highly coveted, said Smith.
