Storm warning: Snow and wind tonight and Monday [UPDATED]

Published 7:01pm Sunday, March 17, 2013 Updated 8:52pm Sunday, March 17, 2013

Snow began accumulating shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday and reduced visibility was being reported to be as low as a half mile in rural areas. The first band of precipitation from a developing winter storm was passing through Fergus Falls, with radar showing heavier snow behind. MnDOT was reporting difficult driving conditions already on Interstate 94 to the northwest and Highway 210 west of Fergus Falls.

A National Weather Service winter storm warning was extended until 7 p.m. Monday. The warning  calls for snow and high winds across the region tonight and into Monday. The Fergus Falls area is forecast to get several inches of new snow, although the NWS warning said that some portions of the region may get as much as 10.

Another concern is strong winds that were already pushing Friday’s old snow across rural east-west highways by mid-afternoon Sunday. Winds were at 24 mph gusting to 28 mph at 6:30 p.m. Gusts as high as 32 mph were forecast for tonight. Monday is forecast to bring gusts as strong as 40 mph.

Temperatures in the low 20s are expected Monday, before the mercury plunges  Monday night, the start of a cold spell through Wednesday. Monday’s low is forecast at -5, Tuesday’s high at 12.
