Alleged GNC thieves nabbed in NebraskaPublished 11:01am Tuesday, April 23, 2013
The two suspects who allegedly robbed the General Nutrition Center in Fergus Falls over the weekend were located in Nebraska and arrested after a chase Monday night, according to Fergus Falls police.
Jarrod Birch, 24, and Alyssa Beard, 19, both originally from the state of Virginia, allegedly committed robberies in Virginia, Missouri, South Dakota and Minnesota from April 16 to April 20. When interviewed by authorities, Birch reportedly admitted to five robberies besides the one in Fergus Falls at WestRidge Mall Saturday afternoon.
The pair allegedly entered the GNC store at the mall and Birch demanded that the clerk take money out of the register and put it into a bag. They left with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.
Fergus Falls Police Detective Carol Schmaltz sent out an alert on the regional crime information system following the Fergus robbery, and was later contacted by authorities in South Dakota. Birch had allegedly showed his identification as he tried to buy ammunition in South Dakota, but he was not allowed to.
Birch brandished a handgun in some of the robberies, though no weapons were used during the Fergus case, according to police.
The duo will be charged in Nebraska, and then warrants will be issued for charges in other states, according to Schmaltz. Local charges are planned in the case, she said.
