Autism team plans weekend of events [UPDATED]Published 9:36am Wednesday, April 24, 2013 Updated 11:41am Wednesday, April 24, 2013
“A” OK Autism Support Group and Autism Care Team presents the second Annual Autism Awareness Weekend, featuring a walk and area businesses creating awareness of Autism in the Fergus Falls area.
Done as part of Autism Awareness Month in April, the 5K walk will begin at 10 a.m. at NP Park on Saturday.
Activities are being planned to take place immediately following the walk at approximately 11:30 a.m at NP Park. Café 116 will be donating a portion of their profits from April 27 to the Autism Awareness weekend.
On Monday, April 29, Don Pablos will be donating a portion of their profits as well. Holly D. Photography and 715 Hot Heads will be offering their services to families with children on the Autism spectrum on Friday, April 26.
The “A” OK Support Group is a network of parents and guardians and grandparents of children on the autism spectrum. The group meets the second Saturday of each month from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Otter Tail Power Community Rooms. Anyone with a child or grandchild on the autism spectrum is invited to join the confidential group. There is no fee to belong.
The Autism Care Team, a 501(c)3, is a local non-profit organization with a mission to provide support and encouragement of families affected by autism.
Last year’s event proceeds provided support for children on the autism spectrum in the area through the purchase of applications for I-Pads that are used in the schools.
Autism affects many families in the area. Currently 1 in 88 children are diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. There has been a 600 percent increase in the diagnosis of Autism in the past 20 years. All of the proceeds will go toward education and safety material for children on the Autism Spectrum in the local area.
