Otter boys tennis takes two in openerPublished 7:52am Friday, April 26, 2013
ALEXANDRIA — Nobody was happier today than the Otter boys tennis team when they could finally go outside and play some tennis. And they did that very well, finally having their first two matches of the season hosted by Alexandria. The sun was shining with the temps in the high forties, and the tennis was surprising good considering the boys had only practiced outside two times before playing these first matches.
The Otters started the day off with a 6-1 victory over their Central Lakes Conference foe Alexandria Cardinals, winning all four singles and the top two doubles, stumbling only at the third doubles slot. Junior David Schneck played this match at #1 singles, senior captain Jesse Schneeberger played at #2 singles and freshman Jordan Schneeberger played at #3 singles and all powered through their matches, each giving up only one game in two sets in coasting to 6-0, 6-1; 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 scores respectively. Senior captain Sam Steen also won handily at #4 singles 6-2, 6-2 to complete the singles sweep. In doubles, senior captain Jason Burns and junior Sam Rausch pulled out their first win in a hard fought 2nd set, scoring at 6-1, 7-5 victory. At #2 doubles junior John Makielski and sophomore Brady Anderson won their first set easily 6-2, but fell behind 3-0 in the second set before steaming back for a 7-5 second set and match win. The third doubles combo of junior Nathan Kaminski-Horak and Connor Hatfield won their first set 6-2, but couldn’t hang on, dropping the next two 2-6, 3-6 for the only match loss for the Otters.
The Otters then turned their attention to section 6A opponent New London-Spicer and came out with the same result, winning the overall match 6-1. Jesse Schneeberger was in the #1 slot for this match and was in control all the way in grabbing a 6-2, 6-2 victory. David Schneck playing at #2 singles was booming big-time serves in an overpowering 6-1, 6-1 victory. Jordan Schneeberger again played at #3 singles and was off the court in near record time with a quick 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of his opponent. Sam Steen had a workman-like match at #4 singles winning handily 6-0, 6-2. At #1 doubles, the New London-Spicer team was able to convert on the key points in snatching a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Burns and Rausch of the Otters. Makielski and Anderson playing at #2 doubles again followed the same path as their Alexandria match, winning the first set easily 6-2, but falling behind early in the second set before coming back for a 6-4 set win and the match victory. Playing at #3 doubles in this match, sophomore Jake Steen and freshman Cody Drake made a big splash in their first ever varsity action, getting a 6-0, 6-0 “double-bagel” victory in their match.
“Everyone was happy finally getting outside and getting some matches in,” noted Otter coach Norm Newell. “We were running out of ideas for indoor drills after four weeks of nothing but practice. I thought all the singles players were very sharp for their first time out. Doubles always takes a little longer to find the right combinations and to learn court coverage with their partner, but I felt good about our combinations and their play in these early matches. Considering our #2 and both #3 doubles teams had virtually no varsity experience before today, I was pleased with the progress they’ve made in practices and brought to the court today.”
The Otter JV players also showed off their progress made in four weeks of practice with a 5-1 result in doubles play against Alexandria and a 4-0 result against New London-Spicer. Every Otters JV doubles team had at least one winning match. Those teams were Jake Steen & Cody Drake; Dillon Sillerud & Chris Bernard; Stephen Godel & Nick Johnson; Austen Tabbut & Tyler Hobbs; and Mike Mortenson & Jacob Makielski.
