Fergus boys fall for first time to Willmar 4-3

Published 10:36am Tuesday, April 30, 2013

After opening the season 3-0, the Otters suffered their first loss of the season at Willmar 4-3 Monday. The Otters were missing a number of varsity players for the school jazz band concert and couldn’t quite match up with Willmar’s full squad, although they made it close.

The Otters had to fill four different match positions with less experienced players and all four of those positions ended up with losses spelling the difference in the match.

Jesse Schneeberger played the best match of the day for the Otters at No. 1 singles, where he played all phases of the game well to defeat Willmar’s Preston Peterson by a wide margin 6-1, 6-0. The Otters No. 1 doubles duo of Sam Rausch and Jason Burns also had a very good match, hitting cleaning and playing aggressively to control their match throughout for a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The other match win for the Otters was at No. 2 doubles where John Makielski and Brady Anderson started strong in the first set then had to hang on for a 6-4 set win then things turned around in the second set when they fell behind 1-2, but won the last 5 games to win that set 6-2 and take the match.

The tightest match of the day was at No. 2 singles, where Jordan Schneeberger moved up from his accustomed No. 3 singles spot. He played Willmar’s Drew Corneil in the last match of the day, with the team score at 3-3 and after dropping the first set came back in the second set to tie 6-6, giving the Otters hope of getting into the final set and maybe taking the team winning match. But Corneil was a couple of shots better in the tie-breaker which he won 7-3 and took the set 7-6, giving the Cardinals the overall team match win.

Playing in his first varsity match of the season, Stephen Godel lost at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 and Conner Hatfield dropped the fourth singles match 6-2, 6-2. At third doubles, Dillon Sillerud and Nick Houge, each playing varsity for the first time this season dropped their match 6-2, 6-2.
