With spring comes auditions [UPDATED]

Published 10:12am Thursday, April 25, 2013 Updated 12:16pm Thursday, April 25, 2013

For decades, everyone has known of the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. They’ve played in the most prestigious concert halls all over the globe.

And now, this Saturday, they will be right here in Fergus Falls on stage at A Center for the Arts’ Fergus Theatre for two shows (2 and 7:30 p.m.).

The evening performance is the final show in AC4TA’s first Center Series.

I’m planning on bringing my mother to the matinee. She just turned 93 and the Big Band Era was her generation. As I write this, there are still tickets available for both performances.

I hope these April snowstorms we’ve been having bring May flowers and springtime. With spring come auditions for AC4TA’s summer theatrical performances.

This year we are doing something a little different. In the past we have done one big musical toward the end of July. This year we are doing two: a big children’s theatre at the end of June, and a smaller musical geared more toward adults in late July/early August.

The children’s theater will be Disney’s “The Jungle Book Kids,” and there are lots of parts for all kinds of animals: monkeys, elephants, birds, giraffes … lions and tigers and bears, Oh My! (Oops. Wrong show.)

Anyone entering grade one and older is welcome to audition. Auditions are on Saturday, May 18 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and again from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Kids will audition in groups of up to 20 for 20 minutes. Please call in advance to sign up for a time slot. The performances will be June 28-30.

The adult theater production will be “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” It’s a comic musical with adults playing the parts of six very different, very quirky children who are competing in a spelling bee.

You must be 17 years of age or older to audition, and some parts of the performance may not be suitable for all audience members. (Although, the content is not really overly risqué.)

There will be auditions on two different days. On Thursday, May 16, auditions are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; and on Saturday, May 18, auditions are from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Please call in advance to sign up for an audition day and time. The performance dates are July 25-28 and Aug. 2 through 4.

Another summer activity that is taking registrations now is our annual Summer Arts Academy in early August. This two-week arts day-camp for kids offers theater classes with A Center for the Arts, visual arts classes with the Kaddatz Galleries, and dance classes with the Fergus Falls School of Dance.

Choose one, two, or all three classes. The registration form is available on our Web site and at our box office.

For information and tickets on upcoming events, visit our Web site at www.FergusArts.org or stop by the Fergus Theatre box office downtown Fergus Falls at 124 W. Lincoln Ave, Tuesdays through Fridays between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. You can also call us at 218-998-ARTS (2787).

Jane Geisinger is the marketing and promotions coordinator for A Center for the Arts.
