Fergus students attend NFL ‘Play 60′ event

Students in Fergus Falls are staying active, and that’s paying off.

Five high school and middle school students were invited to attend the Fuel Up to Play 60 Training Camp on Tuesday in Minneapolis. The district earned the invitation thanks to all the activities done for the NFL program that encourages active lifestyles in kids.

“It was fun to see the kids’ excitement for being active,” said faculty member Jesse Thorstad, who was a chaperone for the group. “There was a lot of play involved, but the kids still had the opportunity to learn.”

Students from across the state came together at the Metrodome to learn about nutrition, balanced meals and fun activities they could bring back to their school to encourage healthy lifestyles.

Football players from St. Thomas University played catch and ran drills with the students, and tours were given of the Vikings’ locker room. New Viking quarterback Matt Cassel was even on hand to offer some words of encouragement.

Thorstad said the group hopes to put their new knowledge to use in order to help keep the school focused on their health. After getting ideas from a group brainstorming session, they are planning a tailgate party before the first Otter home football game next season. Activities from the training camp will be available for students in order to get them moving during the game.
