Bail was set for $1 million for the Detroit Lakes man accused of killing a rural Dent woman with a crossbow April 10.

David Lee Stensrud, 56, had his first court appearance April 26 in Becker County District Court.

Stensrud has been charged with felony second-degree murder in the death of Geraldine Kading, 69, of rural Dent. Stensrud is in custody pending his next court appearance, which is scheduled for Monday. His bail is set at $1 million with conditions, or $2 million without.

Detroit Lakes Police responded to a request to check on the welfare of a person in the 900 block of Washington Avenue about 3 p.m. April 10, according to Detroit Lakes Police Chief Tim Eggebraaten. Becker County deputies helped city police officers cordon off the 900 block of Washington Avenue for about an hour, until emergency responders could secure the scene.

Officers found Kading inside the apartment, with an arrow protruding from her chest, according to a report in the Fargo Forum. Stensrud also had an arrow protruding from his chest, as he was found lying on the floor of a bedroom.

Stensrud was unable to appear in court prior to April 26 due his injuries from the incident. He did not enter a plea.
